Male Reduction
Though this condition is rarely talked about, it's actually quite common. Gynecomastia affects an
estimated 40 to 60 percent of men. It may affect only one breast or both. Though certain drugs and medical
problems have been linked with male breast overdevelopment, there is no known cause in the vast majority
of cases.
Men who feel self-conscious about their appearance from abnormally large breasts (Gynecomastia) often are
reluctant to appear in bathing suits or participate in sporting activities without wearing loose fitting large
shirts to hide their chests.
The abnormal appearing chest contour can be improved with breast reduction surgery. The corrective
procedures, however, are not a replacement for diet and exercise for the patient who is significantly overweight.
The benefits of male breast reduction are not only physical, producing firmer, flatter and improved chest
contours, but emotional as well, usually resulting in improved self-esteem.
The Surgery
Two to three weeks before your surgery you will visit the office for a history and physical examination. You will
be given instructions telling you what to do before and after your surgery. Prescriptions for pain medications and
antibiotics will be given to you at this time. These should be filled before your surgery. You must not use aspirin
or products containing aspirin for two weeks prior to your surgery. Smoking is strictly prohibited three weeks prior
and three weeks after your surgery to avoid serious healing problems. We cannot stress enough how important it is to
avoid smoking around the time of your surgery. Photos are also taken prior to the surgery to help you and the
doctors gauge the results of your surgery.
On the day of your surgery preoperative markings and measurements are made on your chest to help in the planning
process. Removal of the fatty and glandular tissue of the breast which creates the abnormally full appearance can
usually be achieved through liposuction alone leaving small inconspicuous scars. Rarely, in extreme cases, with poor
elasticity of the skin, larger incisions to retighten the skin may be necessary. After the surgery, the incisions
are gently closed with sutures and sterile tape is applied. The procedure is usually performed on an outpatient
basis.
After your surgery, you must avoid heavy lifting or straining. It's necessary that a friend relative or other
responsible party stays with you the evening and night of the surgery. It is normal to have some swelling and
bruising after the surgery. The recovery time varies from patient to patient but typically occurs within a few weeks.
Are You a Good Candidate?
To be a good candidate for any plastic surgery, you must have realistic expectations about what the procedure
can do for you. It's important to understand that plastic surgery can enhance your appearance and self confidence
but, like all plastic surgery, is not going to solve underlying emotional issues you may have. Always think
carefully about your reasonable expectations and discuss any concerns you have with your surgeon.
This is a safe and commonly performed procedure but, like all surgery, complications can occur.
