Breast Reconstruction in Sarasota

Breast reconstruction is the right of every woman who has had or is planning to have a mastectomy. It can be an important part of the healing process, the light at the end of the tunnel that restores your sense of confidence and wellbeing, and allows you to resume regular day-to-day activities. That is why it is so important for you to have an open and frank dialogue in consultation with your medical team about your breast reconstruction options. At Sarasota Plastic Surgery, our highly qualified and experienced *board certified plastic surgeons are ready to join your surgical team.

Part of Your Team

Our doctors are intimately involved with the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Breast Center. We will work collaboratively with your breast team including the breast surgeon performing your mastectomy, your oncologist, radiologist, and geneticist.

Because successful breast reconstruction, like all successful plastic surgeries, begins with open communication, the philosophy practiced by the surgeons of Sarasota Plastic Surgery is to make your care a team effort by closely communicating with you and with all the doctors involved in your care.

When to Have Your Reconstruction Done

For recently diagnosed patients the question of whether to perform immediate or delayed reconstruction depends on what the best option is for you, which is something to be decided in consultation with you and your medical team. If you have already undergone a mastectomy without reconstruction and are now ready to consider the procedure, our surgeons will begin in a delayed fashion. And thanks to recent medical advances, revision surgery for women who are not satisfied with the initial results of their surgery is an option.

Types of Reconstructive Surgery

The surgeons of Sarasota Plastic Surgery perform both autologous breast reconstruction, where the breast is shaped from existing muscle, fat and skin from other parts of the body, and implant reconstruction where a breast implant is used to recreate the breast. Since every patient’s cancer and health status differs, the surgeon will discuss all the advantages and disadvantages of these options with you and your team, give recommendations, and finally, help you decide on what the best option is for you.

Are You a Good Candidate?

To be a good candidate for any plastic surgery, you must have realistic expectations about what the procedure can do for you. It’s important to understand that breast reconstruction can enhance your appearance and self-confidence but, like all plastic surgery, it is not going to solve underlying emotional issues you may have. Always think carefully about your expectations and discuss any concerns you have with your surgeon.

Next Steps

All successful surgeries begin with open and honest communication between doctor and patient. Are you considering plastic surgery?
