About Liposuction

Both women and men visit us for liposuction from St. Petersburg, Bradenton and throughout Southwest Florida. Also called lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes fatty tissue from selected areas of the body, including the abdomen, hips, buttocks, thighs, knees, upper arms, chin, cheeks and neck. It is performed using a thin, metal tube called a cannula, which is inserted through small, inconspicuous incisions. Artistic and anatomical removal of excess fat tissue can improve your appearance and silhouette.

It is important to understand that liposuction is not a cure for obesity, cellulite or stretch marks. It is most appropriate for people who have localized fat bulges that are inherited and remain despite weight reduction and exercise. Our surgeons often combine liposuction with other procedures such as a tummy tuck or face lift to help refine and sculpt specific contours.

Are You a Good Candidate?

To be a good candidate for any plastic surgery, you must have realistic expectations about what the procedure can do for you. It’s important to understand that liposuction can enhance your appearance and self-confidence but, like all plastic surgery, it is not going to solve underlying emotional issues you may have. Always think carefully about your expectations and discuss any concerns with your surgeon.

The best candidates for liposuction are at a healthy weight with firm, elastic skin and want to get rid of pockets of excess fat in certain areas. Before you have this procedure, you should be in good health and have realistic expectations. Age is not a major consideration. However, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not experience the same results as younger patients with tighter skin.
